Ray Scores Gold for
Doing a Ton

Just a few of Ray's
Carp |
VAC club matches are
very popular and well attended even for most venues
through the winter. But no venue is more popular than Rolf's
Lake, a small match-only water just off the M40 near Oxford.
Everyone of the 34 pegs were pre-booked for the recent club
match with a number of members unable to secure a place.
Before the draw for
pegs Ash Adams drew the numbers of the day's gold, silver and
bronze pegs, the first two being worth £200 to anyone winning
the match.
Gold for the day was
peg 16, a known good peg and was drawn by Ray Cormack, With some
coaching by venue regular Roger Brown, Ray was soon into carp
was he found where they were lurking just in range at 16m on
this pole-only water.
Feeding pellet and
fishing corn he kept the fish, which weighed between 4lb and
9lb, coming throughout the five hours to weigh in his first
match 'ton' at 100lb 8oz. Just one fish short, on 97lb was Paul
Bangs, currently on second place in the club championship. Sadly
not everyone enjoyed such fortune on a bitterly cold day with a
few blanks (inc. Roger !).

A reminder
about the Christmas match at Riverside on December 21. Draw at
8:30 with Breakfasts being served from 8am. |
Tony Williams
|
Some of you
may have missed the sad news last month that Tony Williams,
our Head Bailiff, passed away on Friday 21st November.
|
Tony was a staunch supporter and
diplomat of the club, Despite over recent years, not
having the best of health, Tony was frequently at
Riverside, Frogmore and many of the other fisheries
ensuring all was well with fish, fauna and members.
The club were delighted to award a
Life Membership to him two years ago, something he richly
deserved. Someone like Tony can never be replaced but his
memory will live on and his inspiration to succeed has set
an example to us all for the future.
As yet, no decisions have
been made regarding a suitable memorial. Of course,
members are more than welcome to email the secretary with
suitable suggestions or even simply document their own
memories of Tony on the guest book.
Personally, I last saw Tony
down at Riverside about four weeks back with, I believe,
his grandson, passing on not only his love for fishing but
also for our fisheries and what they represent. I do not
know the young boy's name, he must be about 9-10 years
old. Old enough in fact to cherish, I hope, very happy
memories with Tony which I expect he will retain for a
long long time.

Your Committee are concerned that the poor
catch rates and access problems of 2003
could result in reduced applications in
2004. We plan to stock in greater quantity
at the start of the season as well as
increasing the overall stocking level. We
have agreed with Fisheries to improve
casting access by the removal/pruning of
trees and bushes and to make the Cormorant
protection more fly fishing friendly. We
hope we can continue to receive your support
to make the 2004 Season as enjoyable as past
years.
Attendees will be given priority in
selecting their preferred fishing day. Those
unable to attend should contact Carol
Pickering on 01727 767409 ASAP thereafter to
reserve their preferred date
