SMALLFORD

THE LARGEST of our two local gravel pits, Smallford is open all year round and is situated just off the St Albans to Hatfield road, approximately halfway between the two.

It has some deep water, over 30ft in some places (click here for a map) though there are some shallow banks. Well established, this fishery has fished particularly well over recent seasons. It contains many big carp with numerous upper double and low twenty specimens and pike with specimens topping 20lb regularly. Tench too figure with plenty of fish to nearly 10lb being taken as well as bags of over 50lb.

There is a good head of quality roach to over 2lb 8oz and rudd too reach this size. More bream were stocked in 1996 with the original habitants reaching over 8lb and large shoals of ravenous skimmers now feature in Summer matches. Perch and, on occasion, crucian carp add to the variety.

This is the only VAC still water where night fishing is allowed, apart from the consortium fishery at Paynes Lane, and is strictly controlled. Like all waters our regulations are strictly enforced and regular bailiffing helps to ensure that litter and unattended rods are rarely seen.
