Verulam Angling - Fisheries

FELMERSHAM

THE LARGEST of our two Ouse fisheries, some nine miles north of Bedford. The club now holds around a mile and a half of riverbank including meadows, spinney and islands. There is also a short section near the village church.

These variations offer a good choice of fishing  from deep slow runs where tench are certainly not unheard of, to the faster shallows where barbel, chub and dace hang out.

On a not too warm summer's day, Felmersham is hard to beat - idyllic even, but mild days in winter can produce excellent sport.

Prolific weed growth has been a problem over recent seasons, the effect of lack of serious winter flooding not scouring the bottom, but steps are being taken to improve the situation if nature doesn't do it for us.

The EA are now invoking their latest policy to allow the river to revert back to its natural state which, long term, will be good for the river and its wildlife.

Coupled with this, the spinney section has become overgrown and we hope that this can be addressed during 2003/4 when funds will be made available to open it up.

Arguably, the venue comes into its own during the autumn and early winter when the roach fishing can be superb. There is also a good head of dace and bream are now becoming more frequent with fish to 8lb being reported.
